Half Girlfriend is an Indian
romantic drama film based on the
novel of the same name written by
Chetan Bhagat. The film is directed by
Mohit Suri and features
Arjun Kapoor and
Shraddha Kapoor in the lead roles.
Principal photography commenced in June 2016 and filming locations include
Delhi,
Mumbai,
Patna,
Dumraon,
Varanasi,
New York City and
Cape Town. The film released worldwide on 19 May 2017, and was a commercial success.The film score is composed by Raju Singh who has composed for all of Mohit Suri's previous films.
The songs featured in the film are composed by Mithoon, Tanishk Bagchi, Rishi Rich, Farhan Saeed, Ami Mishra and Rahul Mishra while the lyrics have been written by Manoj Muntashir, Arafat Mehmood, Tanishk Bagchi, Laado Suwalka, Anushka Shahaney, R. Rekhi, Veronica Mehta, Yash Anand, Yash Narvekar and Ishita Moitra Udhwani. The soundtrack album; which includes 13 songs was released on 28 April 2017 by Zee Music Company. The other songs were not included in the album but were released after the release of the film. The album includes a duet by Shreya Ghoshal and Farhan Saeed; "Thodi Der"; which is the recreated version of the Saeed's single of same name.

Story Line :
The movie begins when Madhav Jha (Arjun Kapoor) comes to the apartment where Riya Somani (Shraddha Kapoor) lived in Patna, as the broker (who helped Riya rent the apartment) asked Madhav to collect her belongings, for she left the apartment without leaving behind any sort of information. Madhav, along with Riya's belongings, boards a train to Riya's house in New Delhi. In the train, he opens the box and finds Riya's cell phone in which he plays a video track of the memories of Madhav and Riya in Patna, in which Riya helped Madhav prepare for an English speech to present in front of Bill Gates who was paying a visit to a school run by Madhav's mother.
As Riya asks Madhav to speak in English, the story revolves in a flashback when Madhav was asked by the professors of the St. Steven's College to speak in English in his entrance interview.
In the college, Madhav met a girl named Riya Somani who was giving a trial for sports quota admission. Madhav helped Riya by guiding her how to play the match as she was losing it. With his advice, Riya was able to qualify through the match. With this, they both become good friends and play basketball every evening in the college court.
As Madhav tells his friends about Riya, who became his friend, Madhav's friends, including his best friend and roommate Shailesh (Vikrant Massey), ask him to take Riya for a date. Another day, Madhav asks Riya out to watch a movie and Riya accepts. In the theater, Madhav tries to come close to Riya but Riya stops him and asks him to remain just a friend. The same day, Madhav tells his friends about the movie treat and also that Riya asked Madhav to visit her residence on the occasion of her birthday. Hearing this, Madhav's friends ask him to propose to Riya.
The story returns to the present when Madhav is in New York and explains his story to Shailesh. After that, Madhav again tries to find Riya for about three months unsuccessfully, and his time runs out. He was not able to find Riya and he is totally broken. He cries all day and night, comes home drunk, forcing Shailesh to think of an alternative. He introduces Madhav to a beautiful girl named Anshika (Rhea Chakraborty), so that Madhav forgets Riya. Despite their best efforts, Madhav shows no interest in Anshika. But, just for the show, he pretended that he loved Anshika.
Anshika knows that Madhav does not like her and is just saying this to keep his friend's heart. Broken, Anshika throws a farewell party for Madhav on the finishing day of Madhav's internship with United Nations in New York. There, Shailesh, Shailesh's wife (Anisa Butt) and Anshika bid farewell to Madhav by recording a video in which they described how they loved Madhav. At the end, Anshika comes up in the video and she was sitting in a bar where a background singer was singing a song which Riya used to sing. Madhav recognizes that the singer who was singing in the bar was none other than Riya.
